Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia

About PFU

Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia (PFU/RUDN) was established on February 5, 1960, by the government of the former USSR with a vision to promote international cooperation through education. Just a year later, on February 22, 1961, the university was named after Patrice Lumumba, a prominent African leader and symbol of the global struggle for freedom and independence. This renaming reflected the university's deep commitment to fostering solidarity among nations and supporting students from developing countries.

From its inception, PFU was designed to be international in spirit and practice, creating a unique academic space where students and faculty from all over the world could pursue education and research free from political bias, united by the principles of friendship, equality, and mutual support.

In 1960, the university began offering Russian language courses for international students at its Preparatory Faculty, laying the foundation for their academic journey. By September 1 of the same year, Russian language instruction was officially integrated across six core faculties:

  • Engineering

  • History and Philology

  • Medicine

  • Agriculture

  • Science

  • Law and Economics

This marked the beginning of PFU’s mission to create a global academic environment. In 1965, the university celebrated a major milestone when its first class of 288 students from 47 countries graduated, signaling the success of its international model.

As the university's reputation grew, so did its physical and academic infrastructure. In 1966, with significant support from the Soviet Government, construction began on a modern university campus in the South-Western district of Moscow. This expansion allowed PFU to accommodate the growing number of international students and enhance its facilities for teaching, research, and student life.

Today, Peoples’ Friendship University—now widely known as RUDN University—remains one of Russia's most prominent international institutions. It continues to attract students from over 150 countries, offering globally recognized programs across medicine, engineering, law, humanities, and sciences. The university is celebrated not only for its academic excellence but also for being a symbol of intercultural exchange, peacebuilding, and inclusive education on the global stage.
